Random Music Memories
Oh the random things you remember growing up, like you've flipped through your brain files and pulled out sitting on the Family Room floor, the rug rubbing your ankles raw, the smell of the wood cabinet and the sound the needle makes as it hits the vinyl record, looking down at the Blood, Sweat and Tears album your Dad bought. Why is it that I can distinctly remember looking at Boz Scaggs in his Purple suit jacket, or the black and white album cover with Barbara Streisand and her curly afro hair? (which were Boz "Hits" and Barbara "Greatest Vol 2. ) Which leads me to just yesterday I arrived at my parents, they must be a fan of the "Hits" albums because my Mom had laid out as her proud new purchases "The best of Aretha Franklin", "Best of Roberta Flack" and "Etta James, Matriarch of the Blues", I think really I have to give Loren and Kathy props for still having good musical taste! My brain flips to when my sister got grounded and she got her "Ghetto Blaster" taken away, and the night she stole it back when Mom and Dad were out at a "Cocktail Party" and she blasted Scrittipolitti from behind her closed bedroom door. I remember when my brother's friend Glen Piercy came over and he was wearing eyeliner and they were headed to the "China Crisis" concert. I remember the year my sister and her boyfriend at the time Steven were dressed up at Halloween; Cyn, Madonna and Steve, Gene Simmons. I remember my sis coming back from back from the Prince "Purple Rain" concert and having bought a t-shirt, when the Northern Lights were singing Tears are Not Enough, and MAN did that Michael Jackson Thriller video scare the #@!%$ out of me, my big brother teasing me to noooo end! And of coarse I remember when my sister and brother climbed the "Great Wall of China" to see if they could catch a glimpse of The Police playing some Concert at the Glen Abbey Golf Coarse in Oakville, I think it was later played on "Toronto Rocks" hosted by NOW top NBC New Anchorman JD Roberts on City TV. Of coarse those were the days when Chum City still had a video countdown, and I could NOT WAIT to see Madonna's "Dress you up in my love" debut. Or how about when "Material Girl" came out?? Good God, will Andrea Houghton not remember the shows we put on for our parents. A little "Gowen" Your a strange animal and "Culture Club" Karmachamelion, and don't forget "Katrina and the Waves" Walking on Sunshine, no one walks to the mailbox like Andrea Houghton! I think there was even the song they recorded for when the Toronto Zoo got two pandas in 1985, Qinn Qinn and Shyan interlaced in that torrid dance off affair! Oh the days of dancing in my room to Kylie's "I should be so lucky" well really now I just dance around my flat, with no quams who sees me as they drive by. Now I've discovered Donna Summer......and thats a whole other era to explore! This has now become an 1980's rant, but it all relates to when you are standing in line at Walmart, and your brain picks the "Sade, Smooth Operator" music file and it is stuck in your head for the rest of the day!
